Initial Editorial Comments spelling of epithet corrected by Wilken & Wetherwax, Corrections to The Jepson Manual from "sericofera" in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] (see Taxon 41: 746-749). [The cited Taxon paper (1992) merely states that "sericofera" is an orthographic error, which, according to the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN), is correctable; it does not explain why "sericofera" is incorrect. The epithet means "silk-bearing"; evidently, the correct connecting vowel for the suffix "-fer", meaning "bearing" in Latin, is "i", not "o". According to Rec. 60G(a)(2) in ICBN, the connecting vowel before a consonant is "i" for Latin elements, and "o" for Greek elements. However, (a) also goes on to state that exceptions are common, and one should review earlier usages of a particular compounding form. Since the epithet was spelled "sericofera" when first published (in 1817), some uncertainty remains, although the spelling "sericifera" seems to be gaining acceptance.]
Variant Spelling Araujia sericofera
