Annual to tree
Leaves simple to pinnately to palmately compound, generally alternate; stipules free to fused, persistent to deciduous
Inflorescence: cyme, raceme, panicle, or flowers solitary
Flower generally bisexual, radial; hypanthium free or fused to ovary, saucer- to funnel-shaped, often with bractlets alternate with sepals; sepals generally 5; petals generally 5, free; stamens (0)5–many, pistils (0)1–many, simple or compound; ovary superior to inferior, styles 1–5
Fruit: achene, follicle, drupe, pome, or blackberry- to raspberry-like
Seeds generally 1–5
Genera in family: 110 genera, ± 3000 species: worldwide, especially temp. Many cultivated for ornamental and fruit, especially Cotoneaster , Fragaria , Malus , Prunus , Pyracantha, Rosa , and Rubus

Stem: bark shredding
Leaves simple, alternate or clustered, evergreen, short-petioled, stipuled or not, ± linear, stiff
Inflorescence: panicle, terminal, 4–15 cm; bracts generally < calyx, ± lanceolate
Flower: hypanthium 1–1.5 mm, ± = sepals, obconic, persistent, enclosing fruit; calyx lobes 1–1.5 mm; corolla lobes ± round, cream to white; stamens 10–15 in clusters alternate petals; ovary superior, chamber 1, ovules 1–2
Fruit: achene
Species in genus: 2 species: CA, Baja CA
Etymology: (Greek: glandular mouth, from hypanthium glands)

CHAMISE

Shrub < 4 m, burled, much-branched
Stem: trunk bark gray-brown; twigs glabrous to hairy
Leaves 4–10 mm, clustered; stipules minute
Inflorescence 4–12 cm, dense; bracts linear to lanceolate, green; pedicels 0
Flower: hypanthium strongly 10-ribbed, throat glandular; corolla lobes ± 1.5 mm; ovary obliquely truncate
Chromosomes: 2n=18
Ecology: Dry slopes, ridges, chaparral
Elevation: < 1600 m.
Bioregional distribution: s North Coast Ranges, Sierra Nevada, Central Western California, Southwestern California
Distribution outside California: Baja California
Plants from sw PR, sw SCo, with ± puberulent twigs, leaves < 6 mm, have been called var. obtusifolium S. Watson
Horticultural information: DRN, SUN, DRY: 7, 8, 9, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24; CVS: GRCVR.
