The protologue: "San Diego , California, Dr. Newberry, Prof. Wood. Abundant in the Temescal range, Southern Cal., Prof Brewer." indicates three syntype gatherings. Grusz & Windham (2014) treat this basionym as Myriopteris newberryi (D.C. Eaton) Grusz & Windham, citing the known specimens as syntypes without designation of a lectotype. Entries in the Geological Survey Register indicate that Brewer made two collections of Myriopteris newberryi: W.H. Brewer 135 (UC42542, YU 000811) on January 22, 1861 with the notation 'Fern from rocks by Camp 9 (Temescal) have not see much of this fern up to this date. Abundant in the rocks of Temescal tin range', and W.H. Brewer 148 (UC42541, this specimen) on January 30, 1861 with the notation 'Fern abundant in the rocks of the Temescal Range'. |
