SO BE FREE - 2011

SO BE FREE  #16

March 23 - 26, 2011

Belden Town , Feather River Canyon, CA

also known as SNOW BE FREEZE or
WO - Be -Free (Winter Outing)

Organized by Colin Dillingham

The 2011 SO BE FREE was held in the lower elevations of the northern Sierra Nevada, in and around the steep North Fork of the Feather River canyon.  The area offered great collecting in mixed coniferous-hardwood forests, canyon oak forests, rocky outcrops, and chaparral.  We also visited the west slope of the Sierra, in foothill oak woodlands and vernal pool habitats (at Lime Saddle and North Table Mountain, respectively).  There were special activities for beginners, as well as serious field trips for the hard-core.

We were based at Belden Town Resort in the North Fork of the Feather River Canyon, west of Quincy, California.  Belden is at 2,200 ft elevation, and has rustic cabins and a restaurant/dining hall with a beautiful view of the Feather River (http://www.beldentown.com).  A special treat was a full bar only a few feet from the microscope tables!  It was snowy at Belden, but warm and cozy.  There was good collecting, socializing, and microscopy for all.
