Purpus's reference is not to present day Ralston Valley in Nye County, Nevada.
He was using the map in the Death Valley Expedition (Coville, 1893)
which shows the Ralston Desert as covering a large area of south-western Nevada.
Purpus's statement placing Sarcobatus Flat in the Ralston Desert would put it in
Esmeralda and Nye Counties
Perhaps the name was derived from the name of an
old stage station south of Beatty. 1898.
