The mission of The Silva Center for Phycological Documentation is to develop, maintain, and share documentation in the field of algal systematics. The Center includes an extensive library with an extraordinary collection of rare books and reprints. The Center is adjacent to the University Herbarium's superb collection of dried seaweeds, including extensive Pacific Ocean specimens and ~ 2600 type specimens (https://ucjeps.berkeley.edu/ina/algal_types.html).

The Friends of the Silva Center supports:

  • Travel funds for students and scholars who wish to visit the Center.
  • Maintenance of the library and archives.
  • Imaging and databasing of new seaweed specimens.

Membership Levels:

  • Annual: $45
  • Sustaining: $200
  • Lifetime: $5,000 (one-time gift or pledge $1,000/year for five years)
