Catalog Notes: Compared to Syntrichia ruralis (also a large moss) and Syntrichia norvegica, the leaves of Syntrichia princeps are not tapered, rather under a cover slip they are pinched in at about one half the length of the leaf and then distally obovate. Syntrichia laevipila is also pinched in, but it has less recurved margins and a yellow-brown costa abaxially in contrast to the strongly recurved margins and red-brown costa of Syntrichia princeps. The specimens that key to Syntrichia princeps can be separated into two piles, large-bodied and small-bodied, a distinction that deserves further study. Lena Coleman
