Catalog Notes: This species is strongly retuse compared to Syntrichia princeps or the smaller-celled Syntrichia montana. Syntrichia obtusissima has shorter leaves than Syntrichia princeps, with a ~1.5:1 length:width ratio not counting the hyline base. Sharp et al. (1994) and Mishler (in BFNA) say that Syntrichia obtusissima is a species of Mexican-Andean disjunction, implying that the California material is not to be called S. obtusissima; if so, it would seem to need another name. Vouchers: Kern Co.: Highway 178 below Walker Pass about 2 miles northwest of Cranebrake Creek, Scodie Mountains, Kellman 1442 (CAS); Riverside Co.; Snakeye Springs, Indian Cove, Joshua Tree National Park, Norris 57971 & 57999 and along Highway 74 at eastern boundary of San Bernardino National Forest below Bighorn Overlook, Norris 57860.

Literature: As Tortula obtusissima Harthill et al. 1979; Koch 1950a.
