Climbed Hayford Pk. 9730 ft. today. Took 5 hours. Followed ridge N Wiregrass Spring stopping at 8750 ft, to collect small white Oenothera on saddle of ridge of crumbling limestone. The ground was much trampled by mountain sheep. We saw fresh sign. It was was a stiff climb from here to the main ridge, running about E and W which we followed to where it hits the slope of the Peak. Mixed with Foxtail pine were pinyon, yellow pine and juniper. A purer stand of foxtail pine was encountered at about 9500 feet which extended to the summit. In the open ground were Artemisia and a subspecies of Salvia carnosa. Collected 4 varieties of plants at the extreme summit. In addition to these were Physocarpus, Townsendia, Androsace, Chamaebatiaria and Artemisia. The Androsace was growing in a flattish area of mosaic rock, plants 1/2 in. high, seeded. As we walked over to the edge of the summit to see the point we had reached on May 27 we a movement in the clump of foxtail below us and soon a lame ram appeared, Seeing us it started to move swiftly across the rocks followed by four others, the first sight we had had of mountain sheep. Their many tracks near the summit showed they had been feeding on the grasses of which there are several varieties. They appeared in fine condition.

At the base of high cliffs Berberis was in bloom. Coleogyne is the common shrub. From the cliffs we swung over to Wiregrass Spring ridge returning, to camp that way. Saw some fresh mountain sheep tracks. A Pedicularis had been eaten to the roots.

To describe again the road. After leaving Corn Creek Ranch it travels through open desert for 14 miles between the Sheep and Las Vegas ranges, when it enters a rocky, limestone canyon. The climb is continuous from here through rolling hills covered with pinyon, juniper and yellow pine to Mormon Well, a spring on a hillside. Water piped from it to a trough inside a partially fenced corral. On our return found wild rose and clematis above the corral at the source of the spring. From the well the road continues N down a canyon and is supposed to go to Alamo. We turned off, however, at 4 1/2 to drive up the wash to the site of the first old sawmill 6600 ft. and made camp under a yellow pine near the sawdust dump at a fork of the canyon, the road continuing on to other mill sites and the branch canyon to Bootleg Spring by trail.
| |
|
| |
|
Walked to Bootleg Spring 3 miles southwest of the old sawmill site, 7900 ft. Found two cabins,.with caved-in roofs, one about 1/2 mile below the spring and one near the spring. In a hollowed out place in the stream bed was a pool from which water was piped a short distance- a mere trickle, it took 2 minutes to fill an 18 oz. can. About the pool were wild rose, wiregrass, Thysocarpus, Holodiscus, and Chamaebataria, Against a rock 100 yards above were Petrophytum, a few Columbine (continued next page)
