Drive from Needles to 4th of July Canyon in the New York Mts. 60 mi. stopping near the railroad station of Homer to collect and again on a sandy wash through hills at 3450 ft. At Ledge we enquire about the road to Keystone canyon and are told it is washed out and that we would find 4th of July Canyon, 6 miles distant fully as attractive. The high part of the New York Mountains rises quite abruptly, a rocky, granite range from an extensive elevated plateau, covered with yucca forest. The floor of the canyon is an extension of the plateau to the base of the highest peak, narrowing gradually and is covered with juniper, pinyon and oak. We are camped below hills, near the entrance to the canyon. The floor is covered with a luxuriant growth of Astragalus lentiginosus? In flower and going to seed. Sprinkled among them is Linanthus aurea. One cannot move without stepping on them.

Today collected along the crest of the limestone hill at the W side entrance to the canyon at base of a ledge. P. M. drove up the canyon 1¼ mi. to its head, or to the old road to the Giant Ledge Mine. Area is densely wooded with oak, juniper, pinyon pine, Garrya, Coleogyne and some Ceanothus, which extends up the walls of the canyon between a jumble of giant boulders. The canyon heads up at the highest peak and is blocked with boulders. We found some running water at the base of the sleep incline, with grassy banks, willow and Baccharis.
