Stenogramma Harvey 1840

Thalli saxicolous, with several erect branches arising from discoid holdfasts. Erect branches complanate, dichotomously divided. Medulla with 1-3 layers of large, colorless, isodiametric cells. Cortex with 1 or 2 layers of much smaller, pigmented cells. Tetrasporangia cruciately divided, in anticlinal, catenate series in small, irregularly shaped nemathecia, these distributed over blades. Spermatangia borne in microscopic pockets in large, irregularly shaped sori. Cystocarpic plants with axial longitudinal soral areas resembling an interrupted midrib; mature cystocarps small, globose, deeply embedded, without carpostome.

Stenogramma interrupta (C. Ag.) Mont.

Delesseria interrupta C. Agardh 1822a: 179. Stenogramma interrupta (C. Ag.) Montagne 1846b: 483; Dawson 1961a: 5253. S. californica Harvey 1841a: 408; Smith 1944: 276.

Thalli deep red, 6-20 cm tall; erect branches cylindrical below, dichotomously branched and ligulate above; ultimate dichotomies linear, mostly 5-10 mm broad, occasionally with proliferous terminal blades, but apices commonly spatulate. Tetrasporangial thalli with broader blades than sexual thalli; sori irregularly spaced, producing mottled surface.

Frequent on rocks, low intertidal to subtidal (to 30 m), S. Br. Columbia to Cabo de San Lucas, Baja Calif. Also Atlantic Europe. Type locality: Spain.
