Thalli with blades broad and circular, simple, dissected, lobed, or peltate, 4-10(20) cm diam.; intertidal specimens deep rose, crisp, brittle, the large cells of medulla visible with unaided eye; subtidal specimens bluish red, slippery, tough, no medullary cells visible in surface view; margins at end of growing season irregularly eroded, often raised; gonimoblasts scattered over surface.
Frequent, saxicolous, low intertidal to subtidal (30 m), N. Br. Columbia to Pta. Santo Tomas, Baja Calif. Type locality: Pt. Pinos (Pacific Grove), Calif.
