Plocamium Lamouroux 1813

Thalli erect, sometimes arising from discoid attachments, most often from stoloniferous, prostrate branches with small attachment disks. Erect branches freely branched, compressed to strongly flattened. Branching sympodial, alternately distichous, pectinate, each pectination with 2-5 branchlets. Branches uniaxial, each cell of axial filaments bearing 2 lateral filaments. Cells cut off from lateral filaments progressively smaller outward, forming compact cortex. Tetrasporangia in groups in small, usually compound, special branchlets. Spermatangia covering ultimate branchlets; cystocarps without carpostome.

Plocamium oregonum Doty Doty 1947b: 177.

Thalli forming hemispherical tufts, dull red, to 13 cm tall; major axes mostly less than 1 mm broad, somewhat pinnately branched above; branchlets few and short on lower parts of main branches, slender in upper parts, the apices curving outward; reproduction as for genus.

Occasional, saxicolous, lower intertidal to subtidal (3 m), S. Br. Columbia to Sonoma Co., Calif. Type locality: Brookings, Ore.
