Rhodomela C. Agardh 1822

Thalli usually with several to many erect axes arising from a common base. Erect axes terete or slightly compressed, with several long branches divided into progressively shorter branches. Apices of young branchlets with branched trichoblasts; all branches polysiphonous, a condition soon obscured by division and redivision of pericentral cells. Tetrasporangia tetrahedrally divided, in 2 parallel rows in slightly inflated, stichidiumlike branchlets, 2 tetrasporangia per segment. Spermatangial stichidia in corymbose clusters. Cystocarps with ostiolate pericarp; only terminal cells of gonimoblast forming carposporangia.

Rhodomela larix (Turn.) C. Ag.

Fucus larix Turner 1819: 23. Rhodomela larix (Turn.) C. Agardh 1822a: 376; Smith 1944: 374.

Thalli annual, mostly 10-20 cm tall, brownish-black; ultimate branchlets 5-10 mm long, of mostly uniform length; branches and branchlets wiry; other characters as for genus.
