Amphiroa Lamouroux 181:2
Thalli of articulated fronds arising from crustose bases. Intergenicular medulla consisting of straight cells arrayed in numerous arching tiers of differing heights. Genicular medulla of straight cells arrayed in 1 to several arching tiers, also of differing heights; both intergenicula and genicula corticated. Branch apices with cover cells. Secondary pit-connections present; intercellular fusions lacking. Conceptacles lateral, uniporate, developing from cortical tissue. Roofs of tetrasporangial conceptacles sometimes formed by growth of tissue from within fertile area. Spermatangia developing only on floor of conceptacle.
Amphiroa zonata Yendo
Yendo 1902b: 10; Dawson 1953a: 146.
Thalli erect, to 6 cm tall, regularly to irregularly dichotomously branched; intergenicula cylindrical or compressed, with annular markings when young, to 1.2 mm diam., usually more than 1 cm long; intergenicular medulla usually with groups of 3 or 4 tiers of long cells alternating with single tier of short cells; genicula usually with 3 medullary tiers, the cortex discontinuous with intergenicular cortex; tetrasporangial and bisporangial conceptacles protruding slightly, 350-500 µm diam; sexual plants not known.
