Explore the central desert region of Baja California and the spectacular Cataviña boulder fields while focusing on the flora of the area. After the Spring rains arrive, the Baja California desert will come alive with color and diversity as desert annuals spring forth in all of their splendor. Many of the plants from the peninsula are quite unique and can stretch one's imagination in respect to plant form and structure. Some of these in the Cataviña include: the bizarre boojum tree/cirio (Fouquieria columnaris); the giant cardón cactus (Pachycereus pringlei); and strange elephant trees (Pachycormus discolorand Bursera spp.). Come join us on this botanical adventure that will explore both coastal chaparral and desert vegetation. Many of the plants in this region do not make it north of the US/Mexico border and others are restricted only to this area, so be prepared to encounter new species.
