uninvestigated in Pacific coast populations; in the Netherlands, alternation of bisexual gametophytic filaments with a unicellular sporophyte by means of quadriflagellate zoospores and biflagellate isogametes; filaments recycling by means of aplanospores and zoospores similar to those produced by sporophyte; parthenogenesis occasionally observed (Lokhorst 1979); in France, zygotes germinating immediately to produce sporophytic filaments similar to gametophytic filaments or encysted zygotes forming aplanospores which give rise to unisexual gametophytic filaments that produce anisogametes (Perrot 1968)
