Fruit: capsule, drupe, berry. Seed: generally many, winged or not. NATIVE Habit: Shrub, glabrous to puberulent, rhizome generally 0. Stem: erect, 1--4 m, generally not rooting; twigs strongly angled, green. Leaf: deciduous, rarely evergreen in young pls, 10--25 mm, elliptic to ovate, thin, entire to serrate or with only deciduous, sharp point at tip, abaxially (especially midvein) puberulent, veins prominent. Inflorescence: flowers 1 in axils of lowest leaves of youngest shoots; pedicel not jointed to flower, bractlets 0. Flower: calyx lobes +- 0 or < tube, rounded, deciduous; corolla < 5 mm, +- green or +- pink; anthers awned. Fruit: 6--10 mm diam, bright red. Chromosomes: 2n=24. Ecology: Moist, shaded woodland; Elevation: 3--1400 m. Bioregional Distribution: NCo, KR, NCoRO, n&c SNH, SnFrB; Distribution Outside California: to southeastern Alaska. Flowering Time: May--Jun Unabridged Note: Alison Colwell (pers. comm.) reports that plants from Yosemite area differ in being more lax, rooting along branches, having fruit blue-black with calyx ring, sweet taste, and possibly in seeds.
