Primula pauciflora (Greene) Mast & Reveal
Habit: Plant generally glabrous. Stem: 10--40 cm. Leaf: 4--25 cm; blade oblanceolate to ovate, generally narrowed +- gradually to petiole, generally entire. Inflorescence: 2--15-flowered. Flower: corolla lobes generally 9--14 mm, magenta to lavender; filament tube 1.5--3.5 mm, dark maroon to black, anthers 3--5.5 mm, connective smooth (to longitudinally wrinkled when dry), maroon or maroon and yellow to black; stigma +- not enlarged. Fruit: 5-valved. Chromosomes: 2n=44,88, 132.
Ecology: Wet meadows; Elevation: 1200--2200 m. Bioregional Distribution: CaRH, GB (expected but evidently not collected W&I), DMtns; Distribution Outside California: to Alaska, eastern United States, Mexico. Flowering Time: May--Aug Note: Highly variable polyploid complex in need of further study.

Unabridged Note: Highly variable polyploid complex in need of further study. Three varieties recognized for California by Reveal, treated in TJM2 as synonyms pending sufficient genetic, ecological, and geographic evidence, for which there are now combinations in Primula: Primula pauciflora (Greene) Mast & Reveal var. pauciflora, Lassen Co. to Alaska, North Dakota, Nebraska, MEX; Primula pauciflora var. monantha (Greene) Mast & Reveal, Del Norte Co. to Washington, also possibly Utah; and Primula pauciflora var. shoshonense (A. Nelson) Mast & Reveal, Mono and Inyo cos. (including Fish Slough, Owens Valley) to Oregon, Idaho, UT.
