Plagiobothrys verrucosus (Phil.) I.M. Johnst.
Habit: Annual, +- red, staining, hairs stiff, spreading. Stem: erect, 0.5--2 dm. Leaf: basal in rosette, 1--3 cm; cauline alternate, ovate. Inflorescence: bracts throughout. Flower: calyx 1.5--2 mm, hairs dense, appressed to ascending, straight; corolla limb 1.5--3 mm diam, stained pink, appendages pale yellow. Fruit: nutlet +- 1.5 mm, ovate, brown, +- flat; abaxial ridge narrow, lateral ridges 0, cross-ribs 0, interspaces 0, surface with irregular papillae, tubercles, occasionally low wrinkles; scar near middle, +- round. Chromosomes: 2n=24.
Ecology: Open chaparral, gravelly soil, +- fire follower; Elevation: 700--850 m. Bioregional Distribution: se SnFrB (Mount Hamilton Range); Distribution Outside California: southern South America. Flowering Time: Mar--May
Synonyms: Plagiobothrys myosotoides (Lehm.) Brand, misappl.; Plagiobothrys myosotoides subsp. verrucosus (Phil.) N. Horn, ined.
Unabridged Note: Assignment of California material to this taxon based on Horn's dissertation, 2000, in which Horn used a name that was never published, Plagiobothrys myosotoides (Lehm.) Brand subsp. verrucosus (Phil.) N. Horn ined. Seldom collected. Perhaps most closely related to, confused with Plagiobothrys uncinatus.
