Juncus articulatus L. subsp. articulatus
Habit: Perennial herb 10--60 cm; rhizome short, branching. Stem: erect or ascending; nodes generally rooting. Leaf: basal leaf blades reduced; cauline leaves 1--3, sheaths loose, blades 5--10 cm, cylindric or occasionally flattened, crosswalls complete, sheath appendages rounded, 1--1.5 mm, firm. Inflorescence: 2--15 cm; lowest bract inconspicuous; branches spreading; clusters generally < 25, 3--12-flowered. Flower: perianth parts 1.9--3.1 mm, +- equal, sepals acute to acuminate, petal tips generally blunt, hooded, green to dark brown, stamens 6, filaments +- = anthers. Fruit: > perianth, generally dark brown to black, 3-angled, tapering from near middle. Seed: 0.5 mm, oblong; appendages minute. Chromosomes: 2n=80.
Ecology: Moist ground, seeps, shores, marshes; Elevation: < 2000 m. Bioregional Distribution: NCo, KR, NCoRO, CaR, n SN, s SNF, GV, SnFrB, SCoRO, SnBr, DMoj; Distribution Outside California: to Alaska, eastern North America, Eurasia, Africa. Fruiting Time: Jul--Aug Note: Another subsp. in eastern Asia.
