Medicago truncatula Gaertn.
Habit: Annual, sparsely hairy. Stem: prostrate to ascending, generally 1--8 dm. Leaf: stipules deeply toothed; leaflets generally 1--2.5 cm, obovate (obcordate), dentate near tip, length 1--2 × width, generally with dark central spot. Inflorescence: 1--3(5)-flowered, peduncle < (>=) petiole. Flower: calyx 2.5--4 mm; corolla 5--7 mm, yellow. Fruit: 5--8 mm, cylindric, generally tight spiral, coiled 3--6 turns, veins not prominent; light yellow to dark gray, sparsely (densely) hairy, prickles 1--4 mm, straight to curved. Seed: 1--2. Chromosomes: 2n=16.
Ecology: Uncommon. Disturbed and agricultural areas; Elevation: < 800 m. Bioregional Distribution: SCoRO, PR; Distribution Outside California: native to Mediterranean. Flowering Time: Mar--Apr
