Rumex palustris Sm.
Habit: Annual, biennial; generally glabrous; taproot vertical. Stem: erect, 1--6(10) dm, generally branched, red-brown in fruit. Leaf: blade (10)15--30(35) cm, 1.5--6 cm wide, lanceolate or lance-oblong, base tapered, margin entire, generally flat, tip generally acute. Inflorescence: terminal, generally open, interrupted, branches spreading; whorls 15--25(30)-flowered; pedicels 3--6 mm, thread-like, +- jointed. Flower: inner perianth lobes (2.5)3--3.5(4) mm, 1.2--1.5(2) mm wide except teeth, +- narrowly triangular or kite-shaped, base truncate or widely tapered, margin dentate with teeth (1)2--3, 1--2(3) mm generally on both sides, bristle-like, tip generally acute, tubercles 3, +- equal, smooth, tip obtuse. Fruit: 0.9--1.75 mm, 0.6--1 mm wide, light brown. Chromosomes: 2n=60.
Ecology: Wet places; Elevation: < 10 m. Bioregional Distribution: Reported from coastal CA; Distribution Outside California: New Jersey; native to Europe. Flowering Time: Summer
