Habit: Perennial herb, glabrous. Stem: cylindric, stiff, hollow. Leaf: basal and cauline; blade 5--10 mm wide, flat [or not], edges, midrib sharp-serrate [or smooth]; sheath permanently sheathing; ligule 0. Inflorescence: 1 terminal and generally >= 1 axillary, panicle-like, much-branched; inflorescence bracts leaf-like; spikelets many, +- 3 mm, not flat; flower bracts spiraled, 5--6, ovate, proximal 1--3 sterile, distal 3--4 each with 1 flower in axil. Flower: distal-most bisexual, others staminate; perianth 0; stamens 2; style 3-branched, base +- thick, persistent as beak. Fruit: ovoid, not angled, base truncate, tip acute, beak +- 0.2 mm, tubercle 0.
