Juncus anthelatus (Wiegand) R.E. Brooks
Habit: Perennial herb, cespitose. Stem: 45--90 cm, 2--6 strong ridges per side. Leaf: sheath margins membranous, sheath appendages generally acute to acuminate, thin, +- translucent, generally 1--8 mm (until late in season); blade with flat side toward stem, 1--1.3 mm wide, soft, crosswalls 0. Inflorescence: open; lower bracts leaf-like, generally > inflorescence; branches unequal; flowers solitary, generally < internodes; bractlets 2 per flower, generally acute. Flower: perianth parts 3--3.9 mm, +- equal, lanceolate, acuminate, spreading in fruit, generally +- red; stamens 6, filaments > anthers. Fruit: < 3/4 of perianth, widely ovoid, blunt or acute; chamber 1, partitions incomplete. Seed: 0.3--0.5 mm, oblong; appendages minute, blunt.
Ecology: Marshes; Elevation: < 100 m. Bioregional Distribution: NCoRO (Pitkin Marsh, Sonoma Co.); Distribution Outside California: eastern North America, introduced Oregon to British Columbia. Fruiting Time: Jun--Aug Note: Last collected in 1951.
