Potentilla bruceae Rydb.
Habit: Plant +- tufted from few-branched caudex; glands 0. Stem: ascending, generally 15--50 cm, +- shaggy- to cottony-hairy. Leaf: palmate or subpalmate, petiole generally > blade; basal generally 5--20 cm, leaflets 5--7, +- overlapped, central generally 15--50 mm, +- obovate to oblanceolate, 7--13-toothed +- 1/2 to midvein, often deeply lobed, generally gray-hairy. Inflorescence: 5--50-flowered. Flower: hypanthium +- 5 mm wide; petals 5--8 mm; filaments 1--2.5 mm, anthers 0.7--1.2 mm; style 2--2.5 mm, +- slender. Fruit: +- 1.5 mm, smooth to +- veined, brown. Chromosomes: 2n=+-64--98,129.
Ecology: Seasonally dry meadows; Elevation: 1200--3700 m. Bioregional Distribution: KR, CaRH, SNH, Wrn; Distribution Outside California: adjacent Nevada, southwestern Oregon. Flowering Time: Jun--Aug Note: Leaf division, hairs variable, but forming extensive uniform populations especially in northern SNH; probably hybridizing with Potentilla breweri.
Synonyms: Potentilla drummondii Lehm. subsp. bruceae (Rydb.) D.D. Keck; Potentilla subvillosa Rydb.
