Euphorbia rigida M. Bieb.
Habit: Perennial herb, evergreen, glabrous. Stem: many, ascending to erect, <= 5 dm, glaucous. Leaf: alternate, in distinct vertical rows, sessile, fleshy; stipules thread-like; blade 1--2.5 cm, lanceolate, acuminate or with sharp point at tip, +- entire to minutely crenate; distal-most whorled. Inflorescence: 1° inflorescence branches in umbel-like cluster from axils of whorled leaves; cyathia in leafy-bracted cyme-like clusters; bracts opposite, sessile, triangular-ovate, entire, +- yellow; involucre 4--5 mm, bell-shaped, green; glands 4, 1.5--2 mm, transversely oblong, with 2 head-like, minutely lobed horns, yellow, sometimes +- red, especially proximally; petal-like appendage 0. Staminate Flower: 16. Pistillate Flower: styles undivided to forked < 1/10. Fruit: 5--8 mm, spheric, lobed. Seed: (2)3--4 mm, ovoid, +- 4-angled, smooth, +- white; knob present.
Ecology: Near railroad tracks, grassy, weedy, disturbed areas; Elevation: +- 140 m and 270 m. Bioregional Distribution: SnJV (se of Porterville, Tulare Co.), WTR (Thousand Oaks, Ventura Co.); Distribution Outside California: especially United States; native to Mediterranean, Middle East. Flowering Time: Mar--Jun Note: Escaped, invasive (but evidently not noxious) in several western states.
