Polygonum fowleri B.L. Rob. subsp. fowleri
Habit: Annual, +- succulent. Stem: prostrate to ascending, 55--50 cm, glabrous, green, ribbed, branches from base. Leaf: distal >> flowers; ocreae 4--12 mm, proximally funnel-shaped, distally disintegrating completely or to fibers; petiole 5--7 mm; blade 20--35(50) mm, 10--15(25) mm wide, elliptic to elliptic-obovate, margins flat, tip obtuse [or acute], green. Inflorescence: axillary; pedicels included, 1--2.5 mm; flowers 1--5. Flower: perianth 3--4.5 mm, closed, green, margins white to pink, tube 23--38% of length, lobes initially overlapped, not so in fruit, not keeled, oblong, hood-shaped, midveins branched, +- obscure; stamens 6--8. Fruit: exserted, (2.5)3--3.7(4.5) mm, widely ovate, brown to dark-brown, shiny to dull, rough, tip beak-like; late-season common, 4--6 mm. Chromosomes: 2n=40,60.
Ecology: Sandy, gravelly seashores; Elevation: < 10 m. Bioregional Distribution: NCo, SnFrB; Distribution Outside California: to Alaska, eastern Canada, Maine. Flowering Time: Jul--Oct Note: Specimens determined as Polygonum fowleri var. fowleri may be misidentified Polygonum marinense.
