Chloracantha spinosa (Benth.) G.L. Nesom var. spinosa
Habit: Perennial herb or subshrub from stout rhizome, +- glabrous. Stem: erect, 5--15(25) dm, sometimes +- fleshy, armed with thorns or unarmed. Leaf: alternate, 10--50 mm, oblanceolate, generally entire, 1-veined, early-deciduous. Inflorescence: heads radiate, 1 or in loose raceme-like clusters; phyllaries graduated in 4--5 series, inner 4.5--7.5 mm, +- lanceolate, veins (1)3(5), parallel, tips generally rounded, margins transparent; receptacle flat or slightly convex, epaleate. Ray Flower: 20--33; ray 3.5--5(7) mm, 0.7--1.3 mm wide, white, coiled when dry. Disk Flower: 25--70; corolla generally 4--5 mm, yellow; style appendages +- deltate. Fruit: 1.5--2 mm, slightly compressed, glabrous; veins 5(6), +- white to golden-brown; pappus 4.5--6 mm, of many barbed bristles in +- 2 series, outer generally << inner. Chromosomes: 2n=18.
Ecology: Seeps, moist streamsides, often saline or arid sites; Elevation: < 1300 m. Bioregional Distribution: SCo, PR, DSon; Distribution Outside California: to Utah, south-central United States, Mexico. Flowering Time: May--Dec Note: 3 varieties in Mexico, Central America.
