Trifolium retusum L.
Habit: Annual, glabrous. Stem: erect to ascending. Leaf: cauline; stipules 0.5--1.5 cm, triangular at base, abruptly awl-shaped at tip; leaflets 0.7--1.9 cm, obovate, veins prominent. Inflorescence: axillary, 1 cm; peduncle short below, 0 above; bracts linear; flowers reflexed in fruit. Flower: calyx 4--5 mm, 10-veined, lobes > tube, upper 2 > lower 3, curved; corolla < calyx lobes, white or pink, banner tip rounded to acute, occasionally +- toothed. Seed: 2. Chromosomes: 2n=16.
Ecology: Disturbed roadsides; Elevation: 150--800 m. Bioregional Distribution: CaR; Distribution Outside California: United States; native to southern Europe, Mediterranean, northern Africa. Flowering Time: May--Aug
