Habit: Annual to subshrub. Leaf: opposite (or distal alternate). Inflorescence: heads 1--few, discoid [radiate]; involucre bell-shaped to hemispheric; phyllaries in 2 series, outer spreading, thick, free, inner erect, thin, +- fused; receptacle flat, paleate; paleae curved around disk flowers. Ray Flower: 0 or 8, sterile; ray yellow to red. Disk Flower: 20--100+; corolla yellow to red, +- bilateral (inner lip 4-lobed), tube slender, throat widely cylindric; anther tips triangular; style tips triangular, minutely bristly. Fruit: +- linear, +- compressed front-to-back, rounded, +- rough; pappus of 2 awns with reflexed barbs.
Species In Genus: +- 10 species: western North America, southern South America. Etymology: (Greek: nipple seed, from rough fruits) Note: Thelesperma filifolium (Hook.) A. Gray [Coreopsis wrightii (A. Gray) E.B. Sm., misappl.], known in California from 1940 collection in San Diego Co., is apparently not naturalized.
