Cryptantha cinerea (Greene) Cronquist var. abortiva (Greene) Cronquist
Habit: Perennial herb 3--20 cm; caudex woody, branched. Stem: prostrate to decumbent (ascending), +- many, leafy, branches from base; +- strigose. Leaf: basal rosettes generally few; 1.5--9 cm; cauline +- > basal, linear to linear-oblanceolate, abaxially with bulbous-based bristles, adaxially +- strigose. Inflorescence: generally cylindric, +- not elongated in fruit; bracts leaf-like; pedicels short-elongated in fruit, 1.5--4.5 mm. Flower: calyx 2--4 mm, 4--7 mm in fruit, appressed-soft-white-hairy, bristles few; corolla deciduous, aging off-white to tan, tube 2--4 mm, limb 5--8 mm diam, appendages yellow. Fruit: nutlets generally 4, 1.8--2.3 mm, +- ovate, +- gray, shiny, margins sharp-angled, strongly bowed in profile; abaxially smooth, ridge 0; adaxially smooth, attachment scar edges +- overlapped, not raised.
Ecology: Locally common. Gravelly soils; Elevation: 1980--3560 m. Bioregional Distribution: SnBr, SNE, DMtns; Distribution Outside California: southern Nevada. Flowering Time: May--Aug
