Chenopodium incanum (S. Watson) A. Heller var. occidentale D.J. Crawford
Habit: Annual 8--60 cm, erect or spreading. Leaf: blade 6--18 mm, +- triangular-diamond-shaped to ovate, generally 2-lobed at base, moderately powdery to glabrous adaxially, powdery abaxially, base tapered, tip acute or rounded. Inflorescence: widely spaced clusters in axillary and terminal panicles. Flower: sepals ovate, strongly keeled, powdery, generally enclosing fruit. Fruit: 1--1.2 mm diam; wall free from seed. Seed: horizontal, black, margin obtuse in ×-section.
Ecology: Open places, sandy or gravelly soils; Elevation: 700--2300 m. Bioregional Distribution: SNH (e slope), GB, DMoj; Distribution Outside California: to Idaho, southwestern Utah. Flowering Time: Apr--Aug Note: Other varieties in Rocky Mountains, central United States; +- like Chenopodium fremontii.
