Astragalus atratus S. Watson var. mensanus M.E. Jones
Habit: Perennial herb, wiry, loose-matted or scrambling through scrub; minutely strigose. Stem: 3--25 cm. Leaf: 1.5--15 cm; leaflets 7--15, spaced, 3--16 mm, linear to +- ovate, tips acute to shallowly notched. Inflorescence: flowers 4--18, reflexed. Flower: petals dingy white at least at base, dull lilac on margins or tips, banner 9.8--13.4 mm, recurved +- 90°, blade pinched to appear fiddle-shaped, wings irregularly toothed, +- twisted, keel 8.2--10 mm. Fruit: pendent, 16--22 mm, +- 4 mm wide, +- linear-oblong, +- compressed side-to-side, stiff-papery or leathery, minutely strigose; stalk-like base generally 0; upper suture more convex than lower; tip +- reflexed; chambers 2.
Ecology: Open foothills with pinyon, sagebrush; Elevation: 1700--2350 m. Bioregional Distribution: DMtns (n and w of Panamint Valley, Inyo Co.). Flowering Time: May--Jul Note: Other varieties in Oregon, Idaho, Nevada.
