Habit: Annual, biennial from taproot. Stem: generally erect or ascending, branched distally or throughout. Leaf: simple, alternate, pinnately dissected; lobes generally bristle-tipped. Inflorescence: heads radiate, in cyme-like clusters; involucre bell-shaped or hemispheric; phyllaries graduated in 3--6 series, proximally straw-colored to +- purple, distally green; receptacle flat or convex, pitted, epaleate. Ray Flower: 8--many; corolla blue or purple. Disk Flower: 14--many; corolla yellow, lobes generally 0.3--0.7 mm, generally +- glabrous [0.7--1 mm, hairy]; anther tip lanceolate; style tips lanceolate to linear, distally bristly. Fruit: narrowly to broadly obovoid, +- flattened, 4--9-ribbed on each face, sparsely to densely hairy; pappus of many unequal, minutely barbed bristles.
Species In Genus: 2 species: temperate western North America. Etymology: (Greek: sword-like anthers) Note: Other taxa in TJM (1993) moved to Arida, Dieteria, Xanthisma in TJM2 (2012); taxa included in Arida in TJM2 (2012) moved to Leucosyris.
