Habit: Annual, perennial herb, shrub, vine. Leaf: simple or compound, cauline (or most basal), alternate or opposite; stipules 0. Inflorescence: cymes, heads, clusters, or flower 1; bracts in involucres or not. Flower: sepals generally 5, fused at base, translucent membrane generally connecting lobes, torn by fruit; corolla generally 5-lobed, radial or bilateral, salverform to bell-shaped, throat often well defined; stamens generally 5, epipetalous, attached at >= 1 level, filaments of >= 1 length, pollen white, yellow, blue, or red; ovary superior, chambers generally 3, style 1, stigmas generally 3. Fruit: capsule. Seed: 1--many, when wetted swelling or not, gelatinous or not.
Genera In Family: 26 genera, 314 species: America, northern Europe, northern Asia; some cultivated (Cantua, Cobaea (cup-and-saucer vine), Collomia, Gilia, Ipomopsis, Linanthus, Phlox). Note: Leptodactylon moved to Linanthus.

Common Name: WOOLLY-STAR
Habit: Annual, perennial, or subshrub; often woolly, glandular or not. Stem: generally erect, branching from base or above, sometimes unbranched. Leaf: cauline, alternate, entire to pinnately lobed; lobes generally linear or lanceolate. Inflorescence: terminal, head-like or flower occasionally 1, bracted, lightly to densely woolly; bracts leaf-like; flowers sessile or subsessile. Flower: calyx lobes equal to unequal, lightly to densely woolly, sometimes glandular-puberulent; corolla funnel-shaped to salverform, radial or bilateral, white or blue to purple or yellow; stamens fused to corolla at base, equal or unequal, anthers sagittate, pollen white to blue; ovary 3-chambered, style included or exserted, stigma 3-lobed. Fruit: capsule loculicidal. Seed: 1--11 per chamber.

Habit: Annual, occasionally persisting into autumn, 2--40(45) cm, <= 50 cm wide, erect. Stem: simple or branched from base or above, woolly, subglabrous in age. Leaf: 6--40(50) mm, thread-like to linear, woolly to subglabrous, entire or 2--13-lobed (rarely 2-pinnate). Inflorescence: heads terminal (rarely axillary), woolly, +- 2--50-flowered. Flower: calyx 4.5--10 mm, densely woolly, lobes unequal; corolla 9.9--20.0(23.5) mm, well-exserted from calyx, salverform to narrowly funnel-shaped, tube slender, 4.2--9.3 mm, white to purple or blue or reddish, sometimes drying yellowish, throat 0.6--2.8 mm, white or cream to pale or bright yellow, sometimes pale-yellow-spotted inside, sometimes bell-shaped and conspicuously wider than tube, tube + throat 5.6--18.0 mm, lobes (2)3.6--6.5(7) mm, white to blue to lavender or blue-purple, with veins often marked by darker lines, occasionally with few darker streaks at base; stamens exserted +- 2.1--5(6) mm past corolla sinuses, equaling or < corolla lobes, attached 0.05--1.2 mm below sinuses, free portion +- (2)2.5--6.5 mm, equal or subequal, anthers 1--2.5 mm; pistil at maturity generally exserted beyond stamens, +- 8.5--18 mm, ovules 1--6 per ovary chamber. Fruit: capsule +- 2--5 mm. Seed: +- 1.2--2.8 mm, tan or gray-brown, angular to elliptic.

Habit: Annual, 2--40(45) cm, erect, unbranched or generally branched above base. Stem: woolly to subglabrous. Leaf: 9--30(50) mm, woolly to subglabrous, with 3--11(12) thread-like lobes (rarely entire). Inflorescence: heads terminal, densely woolly, 8--50-flowered. Flower: calyx 5--10 mm, densely woolly, lobes unequal; corolla (11)12.8--20(23.5) mm, salverform to very narrowly funnel-shaped, tube 7.3--9.3 mm, slender, white to purple, sometimes drying yellowish, throat 1.1--2.8 mm, white to pale or dull yellow, tube + throat 8.5--18 mm, lobes (2)3.8--6.5 mm, tip acute or appearing so with curling of petal margins, blue to lavender or blue-purple, with veins often marked by darker lines; stamens exserted past corolla sinuses +- 2.3--4.5(6) mm, attached 0.05--0.4 mm below sinuses, free portion +- 3--5 mm, equal or subequal, anthers 1.25--2.5 mm; pistil at maturity generally exserted beyond stamens, 12--18 mm, ovules 1--2 per ovary chamber. Fruit: capsule 4--5 mm. Seed: +- 1.9--2.8 mm, tan, sometimes angular.
Ecology: Open hillsides or gentle slopes, disturbed areas, chaparral, grassland, woodland, mixed forest; Elevation: 100--1830 m. Bioregional Distribution: c&s SNF, c&s SNH, SnJV, SnFrB, SCoR, WTR. Flowering Time: May--Jul
