Vicia hassei S. Watson
Habit: Annual, glabrous to sparsely hairy. Stem: decumbent to erect, branched at base, 0.2--0.7 m. Leaf: stipule generally entire; leaflets 4--10, 5--25 mm, narrowly oblong to elliptic, tip generally truncate, notched, or 1--5-toothed. Inflorescence: < subtending leaf; flowers 1--2, at tip. Flower: calyx attachment basal, tube +- 2 mm, lobes lanceolate, lower +- 1.5 mm, > upper, margins with loosely appressed hairs; corolla 6--8 mm, lavender to white; style hairs at tip, generally abaxial. Fruit: 2--3 cm, 5--6 mm wide, oblong to saber-shaped, initially with a few hairs; stalk-like base 1--2 mm. Chromosomes: 2n=14.
Ecology: Coastal scrub, chaparral, oak woodland; Elevation: < 1200 m. Bioregional Distribution: NCoRO, CW, SW (exc SnGb, SnBr, SnJt); Distribution Outside California: to southern Oregon, Baja California. Flowering Time: Mar--May Note: Easily confused with Vicia ludoviciana in California.
Synonyms: Vicia exigua Nutt. var. hassei (S. Watson) Jeps.
