Vicia benghalensis L.
Habit: Annual, hairy. Stem: sprawling or climbing, 1--2 m. Leaf: stipules widely lanceolate, lower lobe entire or few-toothed; leaflets 10--16, 1.5--3 cm, elliptic to oblong. Inflorescence: generally +- = subtending leaf; flowers 3--12, generally on 1 side of axis. Flower: calyx lopsided-swollen at base or not, attachment oblique, tube 4--5 mm, lobes linear, plumose, lower 3--8 mm, > upper; corolla (12)15--18 mm, dark or red-purple, length when pressed 4--6 × width. Fruit: 2.5--3.5 cm, 8--12 mm wide, densely strigose; stalk-like base +- 1.5 mm. Chromosomes: 2n=14.
Ecology: Grassland, roadsides, disturbed areas; Elevation: < 1372 m. Bioregional Distribution: NCo, NCoRO, NCoRI, ScV, CW (exc SCoRI), SW (exc SnBr, SnJt); Distribution Outside California: sporadic to eastern United States; native to Europe. Flowering Time: Mar--Jun Note: Cult.
