Verbena scabra Vahl
Habit: Biennial or perennial herb, 40--100+ cm. Stem: 1--3 from base, generally erect, strigose to scabrous. Leaf: 4--10 cm, lanceolate to ovate, toothed, strigose to scabrous; petiole generally 1--2.5 cm. Inflorescence: spikes 1--5 per stem, in fruit 4--12 cm, < 0.5 mm diam, open (fruits not overlapping); flower bract 1--2 mm. Flower: calyx 2--2.5 mm; corolla 1.5--2.5 mm, blue to lavender. Fruit: 1--1.5 mm.
Ecology: Wet places, marshes; Elevation: < 300 m. Bioregional Distribution: SCo, SnGb, w PR; Distribution Outside California: to southeastern United States, northern Mexico. Flowering Time: Sep--Oct
