Trifolium willdenovii Spreng.
Habit: Annual, small to robust, glabrous. Stem: sprawling to erect. Leaf: cauline; stipules bristle-tipped, upper generally sharply cut; leaflets 1--5 cm, linear to obovate, serrate, teeth < 1 mm. Inflorescence: head-like, 1.5--3 cm wide, generally lobed, many-flowered except on small plants; involucre wheel-shaped, sharply lobed or dissected. Flower: calyx 6--10 mm, shiny, tube slitting between upper lobes, lobes < tube, entire 3-toothed, bristle-tipped; corolla 8--15 mm, lavender to purple, tip generally white. Seed: 1--2. Chromosomes: 2n=16.
Ecology: Abundant. Disturbed, generally spring-moist, heavy soils, occasionally serpentine; Elevation: 0--2500 m. Bioregional Distribution: CA-FP, MP; Distribution Outside California: sporadic to British Columbia, Idaho, New Mexico, Baja California, South America. Flowering Time: Mar--Jun
