Trifolium pratense L.
Habit: Perennial herb, generally hairy. Stem: ascending. Leaf: cauline; stipules bristle-tipped; leaflets 1.5--3.5 cm, elliptic to obovate, +- entire. Inflorescence: terminal, above pair of reduced leaves, head-like, 2--3 cm wide; peduncle 0. Flower: calyx 4.5--7.5 mm, tube 10-veined, lobes +- >= tube, bristle-like, straight, sparsely plumose; corolla 11--15 mm, generally red-purple. Fruit: circumscissile. Seed: 1--2. Chromosomes: 2n=14, 28.
Ecology: Disturbed areas; Elevation: 0--2900 m. Bioregional Distribution: CA-FP, n GB; Distribution Outside California: United States, especially northern, Canada; native to Europe. Flowering Time: Apr--Oct Note: Important forage crop.
