Trifolium fragiferum L.
Habit: Perennial herb, creeping and rooting or cespitose, glabrous. Leaf: +- basal; stipules generally overlapped; petiole >> blade; leaflets 0.5--2 cm, elliptic to obovate. Inflorescence: head-like, 8--12 mm wide, in fruit +- 2 cm wide, spheric, +- woolly, red or brown; involucre bracts +- 2 mm, +- free, green. Flower: calyx hairy, in fruit inflated, lobes linear, lower 2 bristle-like, > upper 3; corolla 5--6 mm, pink, quickly +- hidden by calyx. Seed: 1--2. Chromosomes: 2n=16.
Ecology: Roadsides, generally in saline soil; Elevation: < 1500 m. Bioregional Distribution: NCoR, ScV, SCoR, SW, MP, W&I, expected elsewhere; Distribution Outside California: sporadic in much of United States; native to Europe, Africa. Flowering Time: May--Aug Note: Cult.
