Trifolium campestre Schreb.
Habit: Annual, puberulent. Stem: decumbent to erect. Leaf: 1-pinnate, cauline; stipules ovate; petioles of mid-leaves > leaflets; leaflets 0.6--1.5 cm, obovate. Inflorescence: head-like, 8--13 mm wide, ovate to spheric, generally > 20-flowered; flowers quickly reflexed. Flower: calyx 1.5--2 mm, upper lobes < lower; corolla 4--5.5 mm, bright yellow, striate, brown in age. Fruit: fragile; style persistent, < 1 mm. Seed: 1. Chromosomes: 2n=14.
Ecology: Disturbed areas, roadsides; Elevation: especially < 300 m. Bioregional Distribution: Gen n CA-FP; Distribution Outside California: most United States except Rocky Mountains, southwestern; native to Europe. Flowering Time: Apr--May
