Sporobolus vaginiflorus (Torr. ex A. Gray) Alph. Wood
Habit: Annual. Stem: 1--several, tufted, erect or decumbent, 2--8 dm. Leaf: base dull, purple to straw-colored, margin glabrous or ciliate, collar glabrous or with hairs to 2 mm; ligule < 0.3 mm, fringe hairs to 1 mm; blade 2--15 cm, 0.5--2 mm wide. Inflorescence: generally terminal and axillary, exserted to mostly sheathed, contracted, dense; 1° branches appressed, lowest generally < 3 cm, > internodes, 2° appressed, bearing 3°, spikelets to near base. Spikelet: 3--6 mm, green or lead-colored; glumes lanceolate, tip acute, entire, unequal, lower 2.5--4.7 mm, upper 2.5--5, > 0.6 × lemma; lemma 3--5.5 mm, strigose, lanceolate, hairs < 0.5 mm, tip acute to beaked; anthers 1.2--3.2 mm. Fruit: 1.8--2.7 mm, obovoid, striate, light-brown. Chromosomes: 2n=54.
Ecology: Open, generally sandy, disturbed areas; Elevation: < 600 m. Bioregional Distribution: e KR (nw Shasta Co.), n SNH (Grass Valley, Truckee Canyon); Distribution Outside California: native to southeastern Canada, central and eastern United States, northeastern Mexico; naturalized in Idaho, Arizona. Flowering Time: Apr--Nov Note: Possibly only a waif in California.
Unabridged Note: Plants with spikelets 1.6--3 mm, lemma glabrous, palea acute and subequal to lemma are Sporobolus neglectus Nash, an eastern North America annual with sporadic occurrence in western North America and possibly present in California.
