Silene vulgaris (Moench) Garcke
Habit: Perennial herb 20--80 cm; caudex branches few; rhizome short. Stem: decumbent to erect, glabrous to glaucous. Leaf: gradually reduced upward; lower 4--8 cm, 5--20 mm wide, lanceolate to oblanceolate; upper 3--4.5 cm, 5--15 mm wide, lanceolate to ovate. Inflorescence: generally flat-topped. Flower: calyx 7--10 mm, generally glabrous, inflated and papery in fruit, faintly 10--15-veined; petal claw glabrous, appendages 0 or 2, minute, limb white, lobes 2, generally > 1/2 to base; stamens exserted; styles 3, exserted. Fruit: +- spheric; stalk 2--3 mm. Seed: 1--1.5 mm, +- black. Chromosomes: 2n=24.
Ecology: Open areas, fields; Elevation: < 1200 m. Bioregional Distribution: CaR, GV, SnFrB, SCo, expected elsewhere; Distribution Outside California: to Yukon Territory, Saskatchewan, Idaho, Arizona, eastern North America; native to Europe. Flowering Time: Summer--fall
