Sidalcea neomexicana A. Gray
Habit: Perennial herb 2--5(9) dm, from clustered, fleshy roots or generally fleshy taproot, rhizomes 0. Stem: 1--several, below bristly- to stellate-hairy (glabrous), above generally stellate-hairy. Leaf: blade 2--5(8) cm wide, fleshy, hairs appressed; basal crenate to shallowly 5(7)-lobed, upper 5-lobed. Inflorescence: open, branched or not, many-flowered, glabrous to sparsely hairy; flower stalk > calyx; bractlets fused at base. Flower: calyx generally 5--8 mm, with few small stellate and longer hairs on swollen pads, lobes acuminate, veins +- prominent; petals 6--18 mm, pale pink-rose, with paler (white) veins. Fruit: segment +- 2(3) mm, sides smooth to weakly net-veined, +- glabrous, beak 0.5--0.8 mm. Chromosomes: 2n=20.
Ecology: Alkaline springs, marshes; Elevation: generally < 1500 m. Bioregional Distribution: SCo, WTR (extirpated?), SnGb, SnBr, PR, sw DMoj; Distribution Outside California: to New Mexico, northern Mexico. Flowering Time: Apr--Jun Note: Variable; taxonomy below sp. level needs study. Occasionally like Sidalcea sparsifolia.
Synonyms: Sidalcea neomexicana subsp. thurberi (A. Gray) C.L. Hitchc.
Unabridged Note: Most California plants would be assignable to Sidalcea neomexicana subsp. thurberi (A. Gray) C.L. Hitchcock, were that taxon recognized.
