Scirpus cyperinus (L.) Kunth
Habit: Cespitose, +- 1--2 m; rhizome short. Stem: 3--5 mm diam at middle, cylindric to 3-angled. Leaf: ligule < 1 mm wide; blade 3--10 mm wide. Inflorescence: spikelets 3.5--8 mm, 2.5--3.5 mm wide; flower bracts 1--2.2 mm, red-brown to +- black, midrib +- green to pale +- brown, +- obscure. Flower: perianth bristles >> fruit, exceeding flower bracts, curled, smooth. Fruit: 0.6--0.9 mm, (2)3-angled. Chromosomes: 2n=66.
Ecology: Fresh moist streambanks, drying alluvial flats; Elevation: +- 1200 m. Bioregional Distribution: c SNH (Yosemite Valley, Mariposa Co.); Distribution Outside California: to Washington, eastern United States, southern Canada. Flowering Time: Aug--Sep Note: Evidently first collected in California in 1976; study of nativity needed.
Unabridged Note: Evidently first collected in California in 1976; several records in CCH (Mariposa Co.), most recently 2003; confirmed as "naturalized in wildlands" by Hrusa et al. (Madroño 49:61--98 2002), but also considered possibly native to California; study of nativity needed.
