Sanicula laciniata Hook. & Arn.
Habit: Plant 5--30 cm, slender, taprooted. Stem: generally branched near base. Leaf: simple, palmately or +- ternately lobed, green; blade 1.5--4 cm, ovate to round, lobes 0--5, margins sharply angled, teeth generally +- 2 mm, central lobe generally > 10 mm wide at base. Inflorescence: peduncle 1.5--8 cm; bracts +- 10, < heads, lanceolate to ovate; pedicel of bisexual flower 0, staminate 1.5 mm. Flower: bisexual 4--8, staminate 10--12; calyx lobes fused proximal to middle, 0.5--0.8 mm, ovate, acute; corolla yellow; styles 2 × calyx lobes. Fruit: 2--4 mm wide, ovate to +- round; prickles slender, curved, +- bulbous-based distally, poorly developed proximally. Seed: face grooved. Chromosomes: 2n=16.
Ecology: Coastal, open or shrubby slopes, woodland; Elevation: 30--900 m. Bioregional Distribution: NCo, NCoR, CCo, SnFrB, SCoRO; Distribution Outside California: southern Oregon. Flowering Time: Mar--May
