Sanicula crassicaulis DC.
Habit: Plant 24--120 cm, stout, taprooted. Leaf: generally palmate or palmate-ternate, green; blade 3--12 cm, generally +- rounded-cordate, lobes 3--5, obovate, generally +- deeply cut, margins finely sharp-serrate, teeth generally +- 1 mm, central lobe generally >= 10 mm wide at base, distal segment 4--20 mm wide. Inflorescence: peduncle 0.7--8 cm; bracts +- 5, 1--2 mm, < heads, narrowly lanceolate; pedicels short. Flower: bisexual 3--8, staminate 3--5; calyx lobes fused at base, 0.5--0.7 mm, +- lanceolate, acute; corolla yellow; styles 2 × calyx lobes. Fruit: 2--5 mm, +- round, occasionally stalked, with stout, bulbous-based prickles, occasionally little-developed proximally. Seed: face grooved. Chromosomes: 2n=32,48,64.
Ecology: Open slopes, ravines, woodland; Elevation: < 1500 m. Bioregional Distribution: NW, SNF, s SNH, ScV (Sutter Buttes), CW, SW; Distribution Outside California: to British Columbia, Baja California; southern South America. Flowering Time: Mar--May Note: Highly variable.
