Salvia pachyphylla Munz
Habit: Shrub, prostrate, 20--80 cm, rooting at nodes, scaly. Leaf: 2--5 cm; blade obovate to spoon-shaped; margins wavy, +- entire. Inflorescence: clusters 2--5 per flower stem, 20--50 mm wide; flower stem +- hidden between clusters; bracts 1--2 cm, papery, ovate to oblong-elliptic, +- green to purple or rose. Flower: 8--13 mm; calyx like bracts in color, upper lip 3--6 mm, entire, obtuse to abruptly soft-pointed, lower lip 1--3 mm, lobes acuminate, not spine-tipped; corolla tube generally 13--23 mm, blue-violet to rose, upper lip entire, 4--6 mm, < lower lip; stamens, style exserted. Fruit: 2.5--3 mm, tan to brown. Chromosomes: 2n=30.
Ecology: Dry slopes, pinyon/juniper to yellow-pine forest; Elevation: 1200--3050 m. Bioregional Distribution: s SNH, Teh, SnBr, PR, DMtns; Distribution Outside California: Nevada, Arizona, northern Baja California. Flowering Time: Feb--Oct
